This article discusses the current situation in Ireland relating to car theft and what business owners could do to ensure the safety of their vehicles whilst away.
Recorded Crime Q3 2019: Increased theft offences in Ireland
Figures published in the last quarter of 2019 by the Central Statistics Office show that theft-related offences are on the rise. Car stock is prone to damage and is especially vulnerable out of hours. In order to protect your vehicles, it’s important to verify risks and counteract them as best as you can.
What happens to the stolen vehicles?
According to the Irish Times, an average of 11,000 stolen cars are recovered by the Garda each year, of which about 2,000 are never found. Some vehicles are cut up for parts and others sold under new identities in Ireland. Many, however, are “stolen to order” and shipped abroad where the likelihood of identification and recovery is remote.
Cars are now prone to electronic theft
An article published by Donal Byrne on RTE.ie explains that a majority of the cars are at risk of being stolen in seconds by exploiting weaknesses in keyless entry systems. The technology that fooled the car’s systems can be bought easily on-line. Cases of such nature have already been reported all over the country.
What you can do?
Here are some ways we recommend to help prevent theft.
Vehicle exit points
give burglars a hard time by parking a few cars in the middle of aisles. This will either make it impossible for them to get out, or slow them down long enough to alert relevant authorities. Place a stamps or tags on your vehicles that are easily identified by authorities in case of a robbery.
CCTV & Alarm monitoring
Incidents are acted upon in real-time and trouble can be deterred before it happens with the combination of CCTV and Intruder Alarm monitoring.
Adequate lighting
Install a motion detector light that shines on the area where vehicles are parked. Bright lights will deter criminal activity.
Clear Signage & Display
Display signage which is clearly visible and noticeable displaying CCTV recording in operation.
24 Hour Alarm Response Support
Safety of yourself and any member of staff is paramount. If there is an alarm activation, engage with a professional security company to attend to the scene. Security professionals attend your premises, access the building, determine the situation and take the appropriate action.
